Moon Rising Over Cordova

Moon Rising Over Cordova

The moon rose over the ridge
full and bright
the calles of Cordova
illuminated
walking in callejones
rushing to get home
midnight approaches
the clouds float over the moon
the darkness begins to set in
I began to hear strange noises
memories of bruja stories
bombard my mind
fear sets in,
what do you expect from an
8 year old.
I began to pick up speed
running home
cold fingers on my neck
cold air in the wind
fear sets in deeper
panic sets in
the moon peeks out
from behind the clouds
strange noises
don’t fade
they move with the wind
hair on the back of my neck stands
as noises weave between
tree branches
strange noises
wake up coyotes
howls heard miles away
Cordova, land of brujas
gifts you with fear
as strange noises
weave between tree branches
and through callejones.
