Altan in Concert by Bill Nevins

Belfast flute player Frankie Kennedy married Gweedore,
County Donegal singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh in 1981. The
two school teachers shared a love of traditional Irish music
and a joy in performance. They eventually gave up their
teaching jobs and became full time performing and recording
artists with their band, Altan. They toured Ireland, Europe
and the wide world together. Sadly, Frankie died of cancer
in 1991 but Mairéad and Altan, after hard grieving, kept on
traveling and kept on thrilling audiences everywhere,
collecting awards for their best selling albums and praise
for their ever-brilliant shows.

Altan view Irish traditional music as a modern music in
every sense and they have done more than any other band of
musicians to convince the world of that.
The seeds of the band lie in the music and fun of gatherings
and sessions in kitchens and pubs in Donegal where virtuoso
music was heard in an atmosphere of respect and intimacy.
And that is how they share their music, and their warmth
with audiences, who feel like they are at home in a cozy
kitchen. That is why Altan are so loved.
