City of Rocks

City of Rocks

Oil tanker cars line up through the flats
between Deming and Silver City
their shiny blackness in contrast
with coarse desert sand

Ocotillo and cholla bloom
as always
The rocks were here
34 million years before us

The wind doesn’t listen
to our government’s blaring of superior status
to strip the mountains
spit forth hate

The few oil cars are lost on this vastness
wind shapes the volcanic rocks
comforts us as we walk on paths
to what we must do in this world
